In-Person 2026 Workshops | Week 1 | July 6-10

The workshop sessions are small, averaging fewer than 15 participants. Each session is designed to meet the needs of the individual participants to ensure that each teacher returns to the classroom with increased confidence and strategies for success.

The leaders are experienced AP teachers with outstanding reputations in public and private schools. All serve as readers at their respective AP readings and are endorsed by the College Board to lead AP workshops. Many of our consultants are table leaders and members of their respective course’s test development committee.

AP African American Studies

Instructor: Rachel Williams-Giordano

AP African American Studies is an interdisciplinary course that examines the diversity of African American experiences through direct encounters with authentic and varied sources. During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to interact with the framework and learn new tools to recruit students to the course. Here are specifics about what to expect:

Day One ~ After introductions, participants will do a deep dive into the framework and learn about the structure of the weekly foci. In addition, they will interact with a sample lesson based on the updated rubric.

Day Two~Next, participants will be able to learn tips for establishing pacing guides while planning engaging lessons. Sample lessons and materials will be shared as well as strategies to ensure that the methods used are aligned to the framework.

Day Three~After a brief but detailed overview of the exam and tips for preparing, participants will have time to continue to develop plans that will ensure they are set up for success for the start of their upcoming school year. Participants will have the opportunity to share their plans and receive feedback as well as explore resources recommended by consultants.

Day Four~After exploring ways to network with new and previous APAFAM teachers, participants will be invited to create lessons for their first two weeks after reviewing a sample Unit One Exam. Using the backwards planning method, they will have the opportunity to create tailored activities that will help students build the skills outlined in the course and exam description.

Throughout the workshop, attendees will have multiple opportunities for peer dialogue, collaborative discussions, and curriculum development tailored to the diverse needs of Drawing, 2-D, and 3-D Art and Design students.

Additionally, we’ll share insights on effective classroom organization and management, integrating both individual and group critiques, leveraging technology and research, and understanding the influence of historical and contemporary art on image-making. The workshop features collaborative activities and resource development opportunities to enhance teaching practices, including course planning and pacing. Regardless of your prior experience with AP Art and Design, active participation is encouraged to foster the exchange of teaching methods and experiences among colleagues.

AP Seminar

Instructor: Paul Henry

I focus my sessions on practical knowledge and providing resources to help launch the course so teachers may focus on supporting students without having to create all new course materials. Every participant will leave my session with enough classroom ready materials to successfully teach the course. I model my sessions on treating professionals as professionals because that is how I would prefer to be treated in a PD session. Many of my activities and resources may be found on YouTube @MrHenryAPCapstone.
